Neil and Susan’s careers play out in the public arena. Come along and hear Mayor Neil Holdom and Susan Hughes QC share their stories about what it is like having professions that are high profile and under the spotlight.
Following our speakers, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery will host a tour of the Len Lye Centre.

Neil Holdom, Mayor New Plymouth
Neil Holdom studied Philosophy and Political Science at Victoria University of Wellington before attending the Wellington Polytechnic's School of Language and Communications where he trained as a journalist. Neil started his career as a sports reporter at the Taranaki Daily News in 1996 and went on to work as a general reporter, sub-editor and then became the editor of the North Taranaki Midweek In 2003 Neil took up a communications role at Powerco and evolved into a high-end janitor, undertaking odd jobs and cleaning up the occasional mess.
Neil is married to Melissa who is the brains of the organisation with a Masters in Education and together they have three children, Xavier (10) Savanna (8) and Alyssa (5). Through a series of strange occurrences in 2016, Neil found himself in the position of Mayor of New Plymouth and is now working on a comprehensive plan to figure out what he is going to do when he grows up.
Susan Hughes QC
Susan is one of New Zealand’s leading advocates and has appeared as lead counsel in more than 20 murder trials. Susan is a longstanding faculty member of the New Zealand Law Society Litigation Skills course.
Susan was a partner of Govett Quilliam for 18 years before joining the independent bar in 2006. Susan was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2007. Outside of the law, Susan was a Director of the Civil Aviation Authority from 2004 to 2011 and is currently a member of the New Zealand Medical Council and a trustee of the Len Lye Foundation.
